Safety by Tony Cotter
Sometimes people stumble
Sometimes people fall
But my friend I will catch you
Waiting to embrace and lift you
Every time you’ve been loaded
Every time you’ve been hanging
I’ve talked you back from the edge safely
Pulled the trigger, but I was your safety
I want you to be safe
Oh, please put it on me
I want you to stay safe
Oh, please lay it on me
And I’ll keep you safe
Sometimes you can’t seem to see
Everyone has come to know
That she’ll steal and break you
Please don’t hide from me
Because, I want you to be safe
Oh, please don’t run from me
I want to keep you safe
Oh, please cry on me
And I swear I’ll keep you safe
Just one time you
Only once didn’t I
And now you’re gone
And I can’t seem to bare
Oh, please don’t be
Oh, please stay here
I want to take your pain
I, I want to take your place
I was supposed to be there
I was supposed to keep you here
I was supposed to keep you breathing
I was supposed to be your safety
Be safe, please, be safe
Be here, oh God, be safe
I need you to be
I was your safety
I was supposed to be there
I was supposed to keep you here
I was supposed to keep you breathing
I was supposed to be your safety
. . . This poem shows the authors desire to keep someone in their life safe.
This relates to my second quotation. The author wanted nothing more than for
this person to be safe in whatever they wish to in life. The author describes a
various number of things they wish they had done or felt as their responsibility. This is similar to the short fiction. The father wishing he could do more for his son than he was able to do. This is a prime example of safety and danger being connected.
